Waterproof blinds for your bathroom
You know what conditions you are likely to experience in wet areas like the bathroom. From time to time, it’s going to be hot, humid, steamy and just plain wet. Unless you make use of waterproof or water-resistant materials for blinds and other window coverings, this sort of environment can cause mould and mildew in fabrics and warping and buckling in wood products which absorb moisture. In smaller bathrooms, and particularly in some en suites where space is restricted and there is limited ventilation, these problems can be magnified.
Bathroom: Waterproof tips
So it makes good sense to consider waterproof blinds for the bathroom, or at least to utilise water-resistant materials which have been developed for wet areas.
You may be happy to get away with frosted glass and a net curtain, but if there are privacy considerations or you would like a more fashionable and modern window treatment, there are plenty of practical options to consider. Here are just a few:
- If you must have fabric blinds, choose a product which has been treated with a water-proofing agent. Prolonged exposure to wet conditions can still result in the growth of mould and mildew but the process will be delayed and the severity reduced in treated fabrics
- Natural wooden blinds can also be treated so that they cope better with bathroom conditions but the possibility remains that treated wood products will still distort and mildew in time as a result of the absorption of moisture. Blinds made from waterproof polymer products which closely resemble wood can be used as a practical alternative
- Aluminium Venetians certainly qualify as waterproof blinds and are stylish and effective – the only drawback is the potential for salt corrosion in seaside locations
- Vinyl or PVC roller blinds are 100% waterproof, easy to clean and maintain and can be sourced in a wide variety of colours and styles
Where bathroom blinds are concerned, you can put up with unsightly problems such as mould and mildew or accept the regular requirement to replace your window coverings. You can make it easy on yourself and choose waterproof or water-resistant bathroom blinds; these will continue to look good as they are designed specifically for wet areas.
