Installing bathroom taps: A DIY guide
Bathroom taps do, like most things, wear out from time to time or need replacing simply because they no longer fit the bathroom's decor. Happily, replacing or installing new taps is one of those DIY jobs that even a less experienced handyperson can safely tackle. Following some fairly straightforward steps should see you installing new bathroom taps with minimum fuss.
Bathroom taps
Installing new bathroom taps requires a small amount of preparation, the right tools and some time.
- If you are installing new or moving plumbing points, get the plumber in to do this first. Ask the plumber to install a pressure valve as well, to even up the pressure going through your taps
- Check the size of your water inlets. If your plumbing is old, they may be the wrong size for the new taps and you will need adapters, which are available from most hardware shops
- Start by ensuring that you have the necessary tools. You will require at least; a drill and bits, tape measure, chisels, spirit level, hammer, silicone, bucket, protective eyewear, plumber's tape, wrench, screwdriver set, plastering trowels, brush and board and a cleaner (dishwashing liquid will do nicely) for washing hands, surfaces and accessories
- Turn off your home's water supply and ensure pipes are drained
- Cut away tiles and masonry from around the taps, ensuring that the gap is not too wide
- Remove the old taps
- Screw on the new taps, winding a small amount of plumber's tape around the thread first, and ensuring that the thread will be covered by the replaced masonry and tiling
- If the taps face the wrong way when screwed in, simply use the plumber's tape to turn them to the correct position
- Check for leaks by carefully turning the water supply back on. Leaks can be due to incorrect sizing of taps, problems in the home's plumbing or over use of plumber's tape
- Carefully replace the plaster and tiles
- When the area is properly set and dried, clean with dishwashing liquid or a cleaner to remove grease and dust
- If you come across a problem, make sure you hire a plumber
Replacing taps should be a successful home DIY job with a little planning. If you are unsure about any aspect of the operation, consult a licensed plumber, or check with your local hardware shop for advice about your specific situation.
DIY installing of bathroom taps
Successful installation of new bathroom taps should not be beyond the scope of any homeowner. Ensure that you have selected the right taps for your application, have the right tools on hand, and, most importantly, have turned off the water, and the job should go smoothly. If in doubt, though, always consult a licensed plumber for advice and assistance.
