Re tiling your bathroom can give the whole room a lift, with a new look and feel. The variety of tile types available makes choosing new tiles a little bewildering, but also gives you many options to ensure that you find exactly what fits your bathroom. Your choice will depend on practical issues such as wear and cleaning, as well as the look that you are trying to create. Tiles can be combined with underfloor warming systems to create a beautiful, cozy effect.

Types of bathroom tiles

While there is a huge range of colours and sizes of bathroom tiles, there are a few options in terms of materials and shapes to choose from. You may wish to tiles walls as well as floors, and the options are a little different.

  • Tiles come in two basic shapes, rectified and chamfered. Rectified tiles are easier to lay and use less grout as they are cut on square angles, rather then the rounded corners of chamfered tiles.
  • Natural stone bathroom floor tiles are beautiful and long lasting. This resilient option creates a warm, mellow feel, and stone tiles come in a range of types of stone and in different shapes and sizes
  • Ceramic tiles are the most commonly used, as they are cost effective, durable and completely glazed to form a low maintenance tough shell. They come in a vast variety of colours and designs
  • Porcelain floor tiles are more expensive than ceramic ones, but offer superior strength and chip resistance, so are increasing in popularity. They are also commonly used for bathroom wall tiles, and you may wish to create a feature, perhaps above the vanity, using porcelain tiles
  • Another modern look option is pearlised iridescent glass tiles, which create an unusual contemporary feel and work beautifully with other modern bathroom features such as glass untrimmed shower walls, steel and glass vanities and glass bowl basins. Use them to create a feature wall design
  • Marble tiles like Travertine are beautiful, subtle and may be more affordable than you realize. A few can be used to create a feature, perhaps in an area in front of the bath or vanity
  • Glass mosaic wall tiles come pre- designed, and this can be a fantastic way to create an unusual feature that will lift your bathroom above the ordinary

Bathroom tiles need not be the plain practical flooring material that they have been traditionally used as. Choose for practicality and style.
